Save5 Campaign
What Is Save5 All About??
Would you take an organ if you needed one? Most of us would but only 28% of us have joined the online Organ Donor Register. More than 10,000 people in the UK currently need a transplant. Of these, 1,000 die each year – that is 3 a day.
Save5 is all about asking people to register online or to check that if they have already registered their personal details are up to date so that in the event of death, their organs and tissue can potentially be used to Save5 other lives.
What organs can be transplanted?
Kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, pancreas and the small bowel can all be transplanted.
What is tissue donation?
Tissue donation is the gift of tissue such as skin, bone, tendons, cartilage, heart valves and corneas to help others. Bone, tendons and cartilage are used for reconstruction after an injury or during joint replacement surgery. A bone transplant can prevent limb amputation in patients suffering from bone cancer. Heart valves are used to help children born with heart defects and adults with diseased or damaged valves. Skin grafts are used to treat people with severe burns. Finally every year thousands of people with a severe eye disease or injury have their sight restored by donated corneas.
If you would like to join Save5
Save5 is just asking you to register online and if you think you are already registered just to double check by doing it again. Your personal details may have changed. By doing just that you could be potentially helping to save and/or transform at least 5 lives.
What to do now?
Go online www.organdonation.nhs.uk and register. On question 4 where it asks about where did you hear about it could you please tick “Other” and then type in Save5.
When you have done that please just email me at save5@btinternet.com and I will add your name to my chart which will then show how many lives together we could potentially save and/or transform and of course I will let you know.
Please do send me your address so that I can send you a Save5 badge, which I ask you to always wear with pride. It will show others that you believe in Save5 and someone may just ask you about it. Can you imagine if you told one other person about registering online – between you and your friend you could potentially save and/or transform 10 lives. How amazing is that?? How proud would you be?
And finally from the bottom of my humble heart – thank you T. Sandeman-Charles
