2008: North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Citizen of the Year
I was somewhat bemused to find myself not only nominated but awarded North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Citizen of the Year. Recognisiton is rewarding and especially if it is so unexpected.
The Sentinel reported: ‘Angela has raised money for the North Staffordshire Kidney Patients Association and at the age of 70 in 2005 she did everything from swimming to abseiling to raise funds. She has visited Khartoum in Sudan to see how the dialysis machine she helped to raise money for was being used and last year she took Stoke City FC football shirts to deprived children in Ethiopia. she also works for the Racial Equality Council.’
Elected Mayor Mark Meredith in a closing speech commented: “I am tremendously proud of the achievements of the winners, finalists and everyone who was nominated. I am particularly pleased for our overall citizen of the year, Angela Glendenning. She has selflessly supported many causes and her work for the North Staffordshire Racial Equality Council helps to bind our culturally diverse communities together.
(The Sentinel didn’t get some details quite right, but I am not going to complain!)
